Some things are no-brainers. Your auto mechanic should be experienced and certified, he should fix your vehicle right the first time, and you should be able to trust him. These are expected from any auto mechanic. Accurate Auto argues that you should expect more, however. After all, the customer should be number one. Here are five additional things you should expect from your auto mechanic.
1. Minimal Repair Work
Wait a minute… what? No, this is a good thing. An auto mechanic should only repair what is necessary. He shouldn’t upsell. He should provide a written estimate that details all the work that must be performed. If he finds additional work is necessary or recommended, he should notify the customer immediately but never apply pressure for unneeded work.
2. Stick to the Estimate
As mentioned above, a mechanic should provide his customer with a written estimate. The total for parts and labor should be a number the customer agrees upon and the mechanic should not surprise the customer. If additional work is necessary that will increase the bill, the mechanic should notify the customer and receive approval prior to performing the additional service.
Nearly all shops guarantee their parts and labor for a short time. The customer should not be left holding the bag if a repair goes wrong within a few weeks. Extended guarantees ensure the customer will never have to pay for the same repair within the guarantee’s lifespan. The top guarantee in the business is 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.
4. Top-of-the-Line Equipment
Auto repair has changed drastically in the last few decades. The more people need their electronics the more things that can go wrong with their automobiles. Your auto mechanic should only use the latest state-of-the-art equipment to make sure problems are diagnosed and fixed correctly the first time. A customer’s time is better spent away from the service shop.
Unexpected auto repairs can cost thousands and few people are prepared for that. Your auto mechanic should be willing to work with you to finance the repairs. In all fairness, the financing would need to be for those with approved credit only because the auto shop cannot afford to do the work for free. Still, being able to pay the repair bill over one year without interest helps tremendously.
