Seven Things That Will Make Your Engine Sputter All the Time

If your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s engine is sputtering all the time, it could be due to one of the seven problems we are going to list below. Accurate Auto can figure out why your engine sputters and fix the problem. Fixing the problem sooner rather than later will protect your engine and further damage.

1. Clogged Catalytic Converter

A clogged catalytic converter will make the engine sputter because the engine exhaust is not being routed out of the tailpipe. Rather, it builds up inside the combustion chamber and prevents seamless combustion of air and fuel.

2. Clogged Fuel System

Clogs in the fuel system can also make your engine sputter because the engine is not getting enough fuel to sustain combustion. Specifically, you might have clogged fuel hoses or fuel injectors, or you may have a clogged fuel filter that needs to be replaced.

3. Faulty Mass Airflow Sensor

A faulty mass airflow sensor can trick your automobile’s main computer chip into putting more air in the combustion chamber than necessary. When this happens, you end up with a lean fuel mixture and an engine that sputters and lags.

4. Faulty Oxygen Sensor

The same is true with the faulty oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor can also trick the main computer chip into making unnecessary changes in the combustion chamber. When the air and fuel become imbalanced, your engine will sputter if it is being fuel-starved.

5. Leaking Vacuum Hose

Another thing that will make your engine sputter all the time is a leaking vacuum hose. As the hose releases vacuum pressure into the engine, the engine fills with air. Unfortunately, this excess air makes its way to the combustion chamber where it directly affects your engine’s performance.

6. Malfunctioning Fuel Pump

If your fuel pump is going bad, it’s possible that it is incapable of supplying the engine with enough fuel for it to run smoothly. Consequently, your engine will sputter until you replace the malfunctioning fuel pump. We can do that here at our shop.

7. Worn Spark Plugs

Finally, worn spark plugs can also make the engine sputter because it is misfiring. In rare cases, the misfiring isn’t being caused by the spark plugs. Rather, the main computer chip is malfunctioning and firing the spark plugs out of sequence.
