Holiday Driving Tips

Don’t ruin your holidays be getting into an accident or ending up stranded on the side of the road on your way to grandmother’s house. There are some tips you can follow that will increase your safety while you drive during the holidays. The first one is a no-brainer: Don’t drink and drive. Beyond that, Accurate Auto recommends the following to keep you and your family safe on the holiday highways.

Plan Extensively

Go beyond finding the best way to get there. Yes, you need to map out your holiday trip but you also want to take into account a few things. Will there be road construction on your route? Will there be dangerous weather along the route? Do you have cell phone service along the entire route? Are there plenty of places to stop along the way for bathroom breaks and to stretch your legs?

You may find that your normal route to grandma’s house is under road construction right now or that there is a huge winter storm predicted on your travel days. Always look for alternative routes just in case you need to use them, even if your normal route looks good prior to your trip. You never know when something might go wrong that will cause a need to find another way. Plan for every possible scenario.

Plan for Stops

As briefly touched upon above, make certain your route has plenty of rest stops. To prevent driver fatigue and cranky passengers, it’s important to stop frequently so everyone can get out of the car, go to the bathroom, and grab a healthy snack and bottle of water. Stretch your legs throughout the drive, and if you can find stops where everyone can walk around for a while, this is even better.

Plan for Breakdowns

Or, should we say plan to avoid them. Before you take your trip, have your vehicle inspection from top to bottom and any necessary maintenance work performed. You can avoid breakdowns and accidents by replacing filters, fluids, and worn parts. Also, keep an emergency kit in your car in the event you get stranded. Include blankets, water, and non-perishable, healthy snacks such as protein bars.
