Stop by the Accurate Auto shop that is closest to you for your next oil change and let us help you decide which motor oil is the best for your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s engine. There are four different types of motor oil from which you can choose. The best one depends on several factors, including your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations, how hard you are on your automobile, and the type of engine. Let’s talk about the different types of motor oil below and what sets them apart from each other.
Conventional
What sets conventional motor oil apart from the other oils is experience. This is the original motor oil, and it has been around for over 100 years. Conventional oil has a proven track record of protecting the engine, keeping it clean, and keeping it cool. You can count on this motor oil if you drive an automobile that has a standard engine. Another thing that sets conventional oil apart is it is the most affordable oil on our list. Conventional oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles.
High-Mileage
The thing that puts high-mileage motor oil in a club of its own is its ability to protect older engines from oil leaks. It is recommended that you switch to high-mileage motor oil when your odometer turns 75,000 miles. This is the time at which your engine is at higher risk of getting a motor oil leak. High-mileage motor oil contains additives to prevent this. Although it is more expensive than conventional oil, it is worth it to use high-mileage oil every 3,000 miles to protect your aging engine.
Synthetic
The thing that sets synthetic oil apart is it does not need to be changed as often because it contains additives that help it retain its viscosity much longer. This being said, synthetic is the most expensive motor oil on our list. You may have to use synthetic if you drive a high-performance engine that requires it, such as a BMW or Audi. Generally, synthetic is changed every 10,000 miles.
Synthetic Blend
Finally, if you want the benefits of synthetic motor oil without the cost, you can choose a motor oil that is a blend between synthetic and conventional. This oil is less expensive than synthetic but lasts longer than conventional. It also does a better job of protecting your engine.
