Accurate Auto is the best auto shop in Oregon, and we would be happy to install a new clutch in your automobile if the old clutch has gone bad. Some people get fewer miles out of the clutch and others get more miles out of the clutch. It depends on how you drive. Below, you will find the signs that your clutch is going bad. Bring your vehicle to our shop at the first indication of trouble so we can see if we can repair the clutch instead of replace it.
A Spongy Clutch
One sign that your clutch is going out is if it feels spongy. It will feel soft and might even sink all the way to the floorboard without catching. When this happens, you will be unable to shift the gears. The clutch resistance should always be the same. One way to ensure that it is is to have the clutch adjusted every 6,000 miles. This also extends the clutch’s life.
A High Bite Point
Another thing that will change underneath your foot is the bite point. Some people also call this the catch point. This is the point in the clutch where you shift the gear. When the clutch gets too old, the bite point gets higher. Unfortunately, you may not realize the problem at first and simply have trouble shifting gears. This is because the catch point has changed.
Overheating
If you smell burning odors coming from the clutch, it is overheating. Unfortunately, this is usually a sign that the clutch needs to be replaced. We may be able to rebuild it, but an overheating clutch is a slipping clutch. In other words, it is unable to transfer the power from the engine to the transmission or to keep the power transferred until you release it.
Gear Shifting Problems
If the power remains with the engine, you will have problems shifting gears. The gears will grind and the gear shift will fight you. The power needs to be with the transmission in order for the gear shift to be smooth. When the power is with the engine, you can damage the transmission by forcing the gears to shift. The acceleration may also lag if the power is with the engine.
